Once the sharp-tongued critic of Conservative hypocrisy, Bill Maher has become the self-appointed, smug defender of common sense. In his latest comedic tirade on Real Time, Maher warned that Democrats are “doomed” if they don’t rein in “the young radicals cheering on terrorist organizations,” like the Houthis and Hamas.
The same Democratic party that overwhelmingly supports Israel’s war crimes, is also in bed with Hamas. It’s a narrative so absurd it could make a QAnon conspiracy theorist blush.
Maher’s transformation from liberal firebrand to a centrist scold has been as subtle as a sledgehammer. These days, he spends more time mocking and chastizing Gen Z activists and “woke”culture rather than addressing the very real issues of systemic injustice and foreign policy failures. His recent tirades suggest that protesting against a humanitarian crisis in Gaza equates to supporting terrorism.
Criticizing Israel’s actions in Gaza – where thousands of civilians have been killed and displaced – is not an endorsement of Hamas. It’s a call for accountability and a plea for human decency. In the minds of centrist scolds like Maher, nuance has no meaning.
He’s even gone so far as to tell Kamala Harris to “shut up about Israel,” accusing critics of the Jewish state of being “full of shit.” This from a man who claims to champion free speech and open dialogue.
Maher’s obsession with the “regressive left,” has led him to conflate legitimate criticism of foreign policy, with radical extremism. He fails to recognize that advocating for Palestinian rights and condemning violence on all sides is a position held by progressives who also denounce Hamas.
In his quest to be the voice of reason, Maher has become the caricature of the liberalism he once espoused. His monologues now serve as echo chambers for Conservative narratives and talking points, wrapped in a veneer of comedic cynicism.
