President Biden Calls For Assault Weapons, High Capacity Mag Ban/House Republicans React In Usual Manner

Since the mass shootings in Texas and New York, president Biden has called for bans on assault weapons and high capacity magazines, urging Congress to enact gun reform legislation.

…”I want to be very clear. This is not about taking away anyone’s guns. It’s not about vilifying gun owners,” Biden said from the White House. “In fact, we believe we should be treating responsible gun owners as an example of how every gun owner should behave…

“At the same time, the second amendment, like all other rights, is not absolute…

“This isn’t about taking away anyone’s rights. It’s about protecting children. It’s about protecting families. It’s about protecting whole communities. It’s about protecting our freedoms to go to school, to a grocery store and to a church without being shot and killed…

“We need to ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines. And if we can’t ban assault weapons, then we should raise the age to purchase them from 18 to 21. Strengthen background checks. Enact safe storage laws and red flag laws. Repeal the immunity that protects gun manufacturers from liability. Address the mental health crisis deepening the trauma of gun violence and as a consequence of that violence…”

Thursday, Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee introduced HR 7910, known as Protecting Our Kids Act. It passed a committee with a vote of 25 to 19. The bill brings together measures from eight other related bills, which include HR 2280 Prevent Gun Trafficking Act, HR 2510 Keep America Safe Act, HR 3015 Raise The Age Act, HR 3088 Untraceable Firearms Act of 2021, and HR 7545 Kimberly Vaughn Firearm Safe Storage Act.

The bill is scheduled to go through the House and pass this coming week, but since the Republican party’s stance on gun control, it’s highly unlikely to pass.

Republicans in the House reacted in their usual way, by opposing any gun control proposals or measures. One particular Representative, Greg Steube, brandished a pair of guns over a video chat.

Louie Gohmert, one of Congress’s dumbest members, reacted angrily to a statement by Eric Swalwell, who reminded his colleagues that if they were there for the kids they would do all they could to prevent the next school shooting, and if they were there for the killer’s, they would do everything to make it easier for the next school shooting to happen.

Gohmert responded, saying,” How dare you? You think we don’t have hearts? We care about people. We care about their lives and lives that have been so trivialized. We care deeply. How dare you? How dare you? You arrogant people attributing murder to those of us that want to do something to stop it.”

Gohmert is one of those Republicans who has no problem regulating the wombs of women, but any regulation of guns is unconstitutional.

Democrats are always fixated on curtailing the rights of law-abiding citizens,” Jim Jordan said. “Rather than trying to understand why this evil happens. Until we figure the why, we will always mourn the loses without fixing the problem.”

Jim Jordan is one of those Republicans who has blamed mass shootings on video games. He’s also staunchly anti abortion, and like his fellow Republicans would rather regulate a woman’s uterus than guns.

Republicans say they care about children being shot in public schools, and yet they propose no gun legislation to regulate firearms in any way. Instead, they propose turning schools into prisons, and repealing gun free zones. Their answer to gun violence is guns, guns and more guns.
