Former Trump attorney Sydney Powell just can’t catch a break these days. After claiming the 2020 election was stolen by Biden with help from Dominion – the company that produces Dominion voting systems – the ghost of Hugo Chavez, George Soros’, and possibly even China, Powell found herself in the midst of a billion dollar defamation lawsuit.
Powell’s attorneys had previously argued that “no reasonable person would conclude that the statements were truly statements of fact.”
“It was clear to reasonable person’s that Powell’s claims were her opinions and legal theories on a matter of utmost public concern,” the motion to dismiss the lawsuit against her read. “Those members of the public who were interested in the controversy were free to, and did, review that evidence and reached their own conclusions – or awaited resolution of the matter by the courts before making up their minds.”
Now she finds herself in trouble again.
Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers has motioned for sanctions to be placed against Powell for “meritless” lawsuits filed on behalf of Donald Trump.
The documents filed on behalf of Governor Evers last Wednesday, state, “This litigation imposed significant costs on the taxpayers of Wisconsin. Those costs were needless , because Trump’s suit never had any merit. This litigation was precluded by exclusive state-court proceedings, and costs were exacerbated by strategic choices made by Trump and his lawyers.”
Powell’s team of attorneys have released a filing arguing that the motion is “without jurisdiction and is untimely.” In the filing they cited the familiar quote from the Toy Story character Buzz Light-Year, From Infinity And Beyond.
“Defendant would have this Court make new law,” the filing states,”create an exception for a baseless and untimely motion, which – with no precedent in the case law or any rule – could extend the time for filing a sanctions motion “to Infinity and beyond,” to harass a plaintiff in what amounts to nothing more than political grandstanding.”
The reason for the Buzz Light-Year quote is anyone’s guess. Could be that one, or all of Powell’s attorney’s, are Toy Story fans. Whatever the reason, you have to admit that it is a memorable quote, even if you may not be a Toy Story fan yourself.
Another memorable quote from the film that would seem to apply to Sydney Powell is,”There seems to be no sign of intelligent life anywhere.”
