Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer ( D ) blamed President Donald Trump in a Thursday speech for an alleged plot by thirteen people to kidnap her from her El Rapids vacation home, saying he “legitimized” domestic terrorists.
“This should be a moment for national unity where we all pull together as Americans to meet this challenge head on,’ Whitmer said in an address from Lansing, speaking in reference to the coronavirus pandemic.
“Instead, our head of state has spent the last seven months denying science, ignoring his own health experts, stoking distrust, fomenting anger, and giving comfort to those who spread fear and hatred and division”
She went on to say that the president has previously refused to condemn hate groups. “Stand back and stand by. Hate groups heard the president’s words not as a rebuke, but as a rallying cry, a call to action. When our leaders speak, their words matter. They carry weight. When our leaders meet with, or fraternize with domestic terrorists, they legitimize their actions, and are complicit. When they stoke and contribute to hate speech, they are complicit.”
At least six members of the anti-government militia group Wolverine Watchmen have been charged with conspiracy to commit kidnapping. Seven other members of the group have been charged with targeting law enforcement officers at the Michigan State capitol.
